Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation Reaches $4 Million Fundraising Goal for DSM Airport Terminal Project
December 13, 2024
DES MOINES, IOWA — (December 10, 2024) The Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation is thrilled to
announce that it has successfully reached its $4 million fundraising goal to secure public art for the new
Des Moines International Airport (DSM) terminal, set to open in early 2027. Fundraising for this ambitious
initiative began in November 2023, and the remarkable community response underscores widespread
excitement about the terminal and its artistic vision.
"We are overjoyed to have achieved this goal thanks to the generosity of our community and the
unwavering support of our donors," said Dr. Alexa McCarthy, Executive Director of the Greater Des
Moines Public Art Foundation. "The speed of this campaign’s success speaks volumes about our shared
enthusiasm for the new terminal. I want to thank the Des Moines Airport for their collaboration and
support, which has been instrumental in bringing this project to life."
The Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation's website has a full list of generous donors that made this
significant achievement possible. A lead gift was provided by the Ruan Foundation. The $4 million raised
will fund the selection and installation of five large-scale, site-specific art installations throughout the
terminal, creating an inspiring and welcoming environment for travelers.
“Art has the ability to transform a space and add an experience to an otherwise empty wall,” said Kevin
Foley, Airport Executive Director. “We are certain the Public Art Foundation has chosen pieces that will
enhance our passengers' experience while showcasing pride in our community and the vibrant culture of
our region.”
Four internationally renowned artists—Adam Frank, Alteronce Gumby, Gordon Huether, and Anne
Lindberg—were selected to create interior installations for the terminal. Additionally, Iowa-based artist
Matt Niebuhr of RDG Art Studio was chosen for a multi-faceted exterior installation. The completed
installations will be in place when the terminal opens and will be owned by the Greater Des Moines
Public Art Foundation on permanent loan to the Des Moines Airport Authority, which will oversee their
maintenance.
The two organizations anticipate sharing the artwork renderings with the public in mid-2025.
